Sullivan's Island, Read Properly

A Small Island, Run on Its Own Terms

Sullivan’s is small enough that the van works it as one stop — Station 18 to Station 32, Middle Street and the back beach in a single pass — timed around the Ben Sawyer’s openings and the summer beach traffic on Coleman. Half the island is part-time: owners in Columbia, Atlanta and Charlotte who need the ledger written for reading at a distance, a lockbox visit arranged by phone, and a slip they can approve without being there.

Cottages, Teardowns, and the Houses Between

The Station streets still hold the old beach cottages — 1920s and 30s frames with kitchens added in the 60s and laundry rooms improvised on porches, running on wiring that has been extended three times. Beside them stand the new houses built on the same lots, with paneled refrigerators, professional ranges and laundry rooms a story above grade. The once-over reads the house before the machine on both: line voltage under load in a cottage, exhaust pressure on the new house’s long duct, and a look at every connection in salt air either way.

Salt, Storms, and the Back Beach

Sullivan’s has no chain stores and no apartment complexes, but it has the harbor on one side and the ocean on the other, and salt air reaches every machine on it. Coils pit early, plugs green, hood flaps seize shut, and a refrigerator that stopped at five years usually stopped at a connector. Storm season blinks the island’s power more than the mainland’s, and a board frozen halfway gets a proper reset before a board is priced. Repairs go back sealed and the ledger says which terminals were treated.

Three Things Sullivan's Island Asks

Does the bridge affect scheduling?

A little. Island visits are timed around the Ben Sawyer’s openings and summer beach traffic, and the slot quoted on the phone is the slot kept.

We live out of state — can this work by phone?

That is most of the island. A lockbox visit arranged by phone, a slip you approve by text, and a ledger written for reading at a distance.

Our 1930s cottage makes a new fridge act strangely.

Probably a century of extended wiring meeting a modern load. Wes meters the outlet as the compressor kicks in before a board gets suspected, and if it is the wiring your electrician gets the numbers.
